Question

Not all TOC links are working.

Hi,

I am having an issue (still) with only saw some of the links working in the TOC. I have checked the ones that work against the ones that don't and don't see any differences. The first three chapters have links that work.

The TOC was created by a previous writer and I assume it was created as  Insert TOC > Create Standalone TOC. I am including a screenshot of the TOC.

Is there something really not obvious that I'm missing?
Thank you for any help/advice.

    Hi Elizabeth:

FrameMaker supports three different types of table of contents – a book table of contents, a standalone table of contents, and a mini TOC that's embedded in the file. Updating a book will update the book and mini TOCs. You have to update a standalone TOC manually. See "Update a TOC or list that is a stand-alone document" here: https://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/using-framemaker/user-guide/topic_update-and-edit-tocs-and-lists.html

    Hi,

I have added a book table of contents, but I still have the same issue with the missing display and link of the topics for one chapter in the TOC.  I have used the Paragraph Designer > Basic to tag the style of the bulleted topics as L1 Head, but that hasn't made any difference.

Any more suggestions would be a great help.

    Thank you.

What paragraph tags is your TOC doc picking up? I suspect the missing chapter's heading paragraph tags are not one of the ones listed in the TOC's Master Page. Compare the tags used in a "working" chapter vs. the "non-working" one to see.

    Hi Elizabeth:

All of the entries show the TOC Hyperlink marker at the beginning of the line. If there is a character style assigned anywhere on the line, that will limit where you can click to follow the link. Click around to see if you can find it, with an eye on the status bar in the lower left corner of the screen.

    For example,

    Flow: A   ¶ Heading 1 TOC   f:Emphasis

where Emphasis is the character style. Your style names will vary, of course.

    Hi,

I have looked at each entry and haven't seen any other character styles in use.

One thing I noticed in looking at another book's TOC is that the TOC looks like  whereas the TOC I'm having issues with has this:

Is this something affecting those issues?

    Thank you.

Looks like the TOC in question is no longer being considered a generated file by FM.

    Quick fix is to
    ► rename it,
► have FM generate a new one,
► import pretty much everything from the former ToC file, and
    ► re-update.

Hi Elizabeth, Do you get links and they are wrong or dead, or do you not get links at all? Can you email me just the TOC? Thanks. -Rick rick@frameexpert.com
