Question

Number to left of table

I would like to have a number to the left of a table. I have a paragraph style for the AutoNumber, and a table style for the table. The table always places a tag above it leaving a blank space between the AutoNumber tag and the table. Is there any way I can put the table tag right next to the AutoNumber tag so they both appear on the same line?

Thanks in advance,
Anne

    Johannes:

please ignore my last post. I understand now that you meant you have to set the above spacing in the actual table to the negative value too. It's looking just as I wanted now, so thank you very much.

    Johannes,

I am trying to set up an actual table heading positioned as a side heading using your method suggested above. I have set up a TableTitle paragraph tag that is a side heading and a Table paragraph tag for the table anchor, that has the negative before and after spacings. However, these spacings aren't removing that line, so the side heading is still aligned with an empty line above the top of the table.

    Have I misunderstood your suggestion?

    Thanks,

Not entirely clear what effect you're trying to achieve, but would it work if you created a table cell in the proper position, then used Table > Custom Ruling & Shading to hide that cell's borders?

The "invisible" table cell could then hold the table tag or whatever.

(One caveat: If you gen the content as HTML or HTML help, you may find it problematic to replicate the "invisible" cell in the generated HTML...)

    Cheers & hope this helps,

As Art suggested, you could place the numbering in a sidehead.

To get rid of the vertical space used for the table anchor, create an extra paragraph tag to hold the table anchor, with a negative below-spacing corresponding to the line height (e.g. -15pt or so). Set the same negative above-spacing the table.

Did you try setting the pagination property of the tag that sets the number as a sidehead or run-in head?

Because it's different from a table title. The number is not the number of the table, but rather the number of the step.

    1. text
    2. table with text (if/then table)
    3. text
    4. text

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

Why not build the number into the table title?
