Question

Numbering Figures within a Chapter

Hi,

I have a chapter within a book which contains alot of photos, all of which i want to give a Figure number, ie Figure 7-1, 7-2 etc (7 being the chapter number). Please can someone help me out with how i automate this process as I will no doubt be adding more photos to the document and i don't want to have to manually re-number the figures throughout. I have tried several times to create a format, but it always ends up affecting the numbered lists which appear before and after the photographs.

I hope i have made some sense in explaining this!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
Avril Roberts

Dominic- Not sure what you mean "The option is there for Avril to add the word "Figure" to the numbering scheme, but the numbering scheme would be independent of, and thus not potentially thrown off by, other numbering schemes in the chapter, as your suggestion would be." At this time I have large working documents that use this scheme that work, what am I ,missing?

    > Niels- How did the issue of translations end up in Avril's question?

"anecdotally", as marginally related to the use of series labels.

    > still want to know I said was any different than what Arnis wrote noted below.

Sean already answered this in post 4. Arnis's suggestion would not result in "F:<your caption>" - "F:" is a series label. The option is there for Avril to add the word "Figure" to the numbering scheme, but the numbering scheme would be independent of, and thus not potentially thrown off by, other numbering schemes in the chapter, as your suggestion would be.

And, ancedotally, beware of incompetent translators ;-} we had a run-in with an agency who admitted after the facts they hadn't worked on the .fm files we sent them: they'd used their very own conversion software to produce .doc files that exposed all the numbering definitions. Zealous French-speaking translator uses s/r to put a space before every colon ... with exactly the dire results Sherman accidentally predicts.

F: is a series label. FrameMaker's documentation is not great, and you don't know what a series label is called before you find out it's a series label, but "series label" is in the index of the online help, so you can get started there.

    Cheers,

    Sean

    Suggest that you use:

Figure<$chapnum>-<n+>\t

In Arnis sugggestion he shows F: which would result in F:<your caption>, my suggestion follows your question to have Figure 7-1 <caption>

Make sure you have your numbering Properties dialog box is set with the correct chapter # for each chapter using your book.

    Avril,

Use series numbers in your autonumbering. These are single characters
at the start of the auto-number followed by a colon, e.g.

C:<$chapnum>-<n+> for a chapter plus section number
F:<$chapnum>-<n+> for a figure number

These series numbers work independently of each other. See your FM
Manual or online help for more details.
