Question

"Odd Suffix" error message

I am working in FM 7.0 (structured) & I have a document that was created months ago. I have been periodically updating the document and saving it without any issues. For some reason, when I tried to save the document this morning after making some routine changes to it, I got the following error message: "The document was saved to a temporary file, but FrameMaker can't rename it to have the correct name. The newer version has an odd suffix." I did NOT change the file name, type, or location. I can save the document to my desktop with no problem, but when I try to copy it back into my folder so I can add it into my book, I get the same error message. Ack! Any suggestions? I even tried creating an entirely new document and copying the contents of the existing file into it... same deal. When I saved the document on its own, it saved fine, but when I try to add it to my book, I get the error message.

I have also gotten this error when an OLE object went corrupt. It can happen quite spontaneously.

Thanks much to both of you... closing FM & reopening it did the trick! Easy fix... phew!

    Amy,

There was an issue with Structured FM that was fixed in the FM7.1
    update that pertains to this:

641898 All FrameMaker® generates ambiguous error message for
    read/write rule inaccessibility

If you save an XML file using an application for which the read/write
rule file is inaccessible, due to wrong path or some other reason,
FrameMaker® gives an error message "The document was saved to a
temporary file, but FrameMaker® can't rename it to have the correct
name. The newer version has an odd suffix" . Please refer to the log
file for a more appropriate description of the problem.

Also, as Art suggests, sometimes problems in the file management
create these. FM does a three-step when saving a file. First it writes
the newly saved contents to a temporary file with a random
three-character extension. Then when this has successfully completed,
it renames the old FM file to the .backup.fm file and then copies the
random three-character extension file to the .fm file location. Disk
space/access/permission issues anywhere along the route can leave you
with the "odd suffix" message and files.

That's the message that normally appears after some change to the network drives, owners or permissions is implemented... or a network failure occurs so that FM can't see the original -- note that the network hiccup could just be something that's happening in passing and it may resolve itself.

Rebooting may clear it, and you should also try doing a SaveAs.
