Question

Open pdf in a new window

Is it possible to hypertex a pdf document and have it open in a new window? I am generating a pdf for a service manual. I have inserted hypertext to other pdf files in several of the chapters. These links work great but when I close the linked pdf, my service manual pdf goes away as well. Is there a way to have the pdf (hypertext) open in a separate window? I would like to return to my service manual pdf when I close the linked pdf.

A time saver would really be nice. I have so little time left in my days to complete such task anymore.

Frankie, I've bumped up against similar issues due to many PDF actions being controlled only at the user's preferences rather than being a property of the PDF itself.

If you haven't yet had a chance to check out the MicroType "Assistants" products and how they work with FM to enhance the capabilities possible in the PDFs, Shlomo's website and his free webinars (see here http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b84f94 ) are a wealth of information to give you some ideas on alternative ways to make the navigation within the doc set easier.

Other suggestions possible with TimeSavers could be to create a "navigation panel" that would display on every PDF in your service manual and contain link(s) to the other PDFs. Or, add additional bookmarks for the other PDFs.

There is a local viewing preference in Acrobat or Reader that controls whether a linked PDF opens in a new window: Edit > Preferences > General -- turn off "Open cross-document links in same window" (it is turned on by default).

Preferences apply to the Acrobat/Reader copy where the PDF is viewed, but not to the PDF file itself.

In Acrobat, you can modify the link properties so that links open the target file in a new window (available within Acrobat starting with version 6); this will have to be repeated when the PDF is recreated.

It is also possible to add Acrobat JavaScript code as a "document open" action in your PDF file(s), but this requires that the local preference of enabling Acrobat JavaScript, on by default, is not turned off. This will also have to repeated when the PDF is recreated.

[My FrameMaker-to-Acrobat add-on has a function that controls the "new window" property globally or individually, so that no additional actions are necessary after the PDF is created -- see http://www.microtype.com/ImprovePDF10.html for additional information]

hmmm yes, it's a bit whacko for me just now, topics and answers appear and disappear unexpectedly.

Hi, Frankie -- I see your first posting, and the second one about "Add Topic" after it.

The Adobe folks are updating the forum software, so it could be that it's having a little glitch today.

I did click Add Topic. Why am I having such a hard time posting something? I have posted in the past with no problem....
