If you need special characters that aren't covered by the typical Symbols, Dingbats and Wingding fonts for your tech docs, a consortium of prestigious societies has released a set of 23 OTF open source (i.e. free) STIX fonts. These contain primarily mathematical and technical symbols. More details are available in this blog post by David Blatner at http://indesignsecrets.com/pr-stix-fonts-released-for-scientific-technical-and-medical-publishing.php

or just visit http://www.stixfonts.org

Thank you for pointing this out.

Really useful in some special cases.
