Opening saved Lightweight DITA topic file resets all paragraph styles

When I edit and update a paragraph style in a Lw DITA topic document, close and save the file, and then reopen it, the paragraph style no longer has my changes. Similarly, if I create a custom paragraph style, it is no longer available when I re-open the file. What am I missing here?

This is expected behavuiour
Dita doesn't have any formatting of itself  but FM provides input and output templates where you can customise your style and formatting .
To get started you can access recording for below webinar :

When you open an xml or dita file with FrameMaker, it uses a template specified in the structapps.fm file. To make permanent format changes, you need to edit the template that FrameMaker is using.
