"Page Down" problem in FrameMaker

Hey, this is a problem I've seen on occasion over the years, but currently it's really present in a FM8 document I'm working on. It's not a deal-breaker, but it's highly annoying. I once heard someone say they knew how to fix it, but then the conversation went elsewhere. Anyone here know how to fix this?

The problem: You're in FrameMaker and using the PAGE DOWN key to move through the document. You go to page 1, 2, 3, 4, 1... What? Instead of going from 4 to 5 it blinks and sends you back to page 1. You try again and the problem doesn't recur; you get to page 5 and onwards. Next time you try, the problem happens again. It seems random, and there's no obvious reason for it.

Anybody know what causes this, and more important, how to fix it?

Thanks!

Page snap-back is an old problem. It seems to result from:

    • triggering page has an imported object with Run-Around set to Contour or Box
    • the page hasn't been rendered (displayed) yet since opening the file
    • you reach that page with PageUp or PageDn keys, or by scrolling

And it doesn't always happen. It didn't on a file I just tested that is known to have some run-arounds.

    The fixes and work-arounds include:

    • Navigate by specific page number (click page number in window footer, View > Go to Page, or keyboard short cut for that)
    • Manually change the specific import to Graphics >  Runaround Properties : <*> Don't Run Around
    • Turn off graphics for paging/scrolling (using keyboard short cut or View > Options : Graphics [Off])
    • 3rd-party script to turn off all run-around
    • Save document as MIF,
      change all <RunaroundType Contour> and <RunaroundType Box> markups
      to <RunaroundType None>

Turning off RA for everything is often not an option, because you need it (we do for icons on some Master Pages).

So it would be nice if Adobe would fix this, but I can think of other more substantial issues that need attention.

I finally decided to post something about this today as well - it is still happening in Frame 12, in the year 2014!  "Page Down" basically does not work. It's like Adobe are determined to make me use my mouse, and to hell with carpel tunnel syndome......

    The RunaroundNone plugin fixes this:

Mike, that's awesome! I'm not sure I'll bother getting the plugin, but that page explains the problem exactly, and gives and idea of how to fix it.

The crazy file I'm working with has 7 or 8 imported graphics with loads of callouts. I modifed the runaround properties on them and voila! Problem solved!

    Thanks!

You are not alone Ed. This bug irritates me almost as much as the terrible screen refresh algorithm. BTW I am "all patched up". The screen refresh bug goes back to version 4 or 5. Sometimes stuff you have deleted still displays on the screen despite Ctrl+L and changing the zoom will make it disappear. But go back to the zoom level at which it was visible...as if by magic, it reappears as a phantom. Fuzzy logic?

Never noticed it in FM9 p255 - are you all patched up in FM8?

Yeah, I'm all patched up. But I also saw this in FM 7 and possibly 6. It doesn't happen a lot,but when it does happen it's really annoying. (And the file I'm on now is absolutely possessed!)
