PDF Print Settings Tags (Distiller)

I've been working my way through our various deliverables to setup PDF tags so that we can use the PDF comment import feature. I've only done two books so far, but this second book is throwing me for a loop. Maybe someone can tell me what magical spell I must utter or the underlying logic of how it works.

I'm setting up the "Tags (Distiller)" part of the PDF Setup for Print options. I set up one file and wanted to import to other files. I've done this once before with no issue. However, on my second book, it imports partially correctly. Or a tag that is listed in the setup file is not on the included list in the imported file. For example, the included paragraph tags will include tags that are not in the included list in the first setup file. In some cases, a particular paragraph tag might be level 8 in the setup file, but level 39 in the imported file.

Anyone know how the Tags (Distiller) actually works? Or how to solve this problem without manually adjusting tag settings in every file?

    Hi, @davidcfrye5910298 ,

    as far as I understand you have a source file, where you have defined the PDF-bookmark-levels of the paragraph-formats of the FM-file in the PDF setup dialog of the print dialog.

    And then you want to import these settings into other FM-files.

    Addition: These settings can also be done via Menu Format - Document - PDF settings - (Tags) Distiller.

    In theory you just have to import the paragraph-settings of the source file into your other FM-files, assuming that the naming of the paragraph-formats in the source and the target file are totally identical (absolutely no difference).

    In the MIF-file one can find two entries in the paragraph-format definitions:

    <PgfAcrobatLevel 5>
    <PgfPDFStructureLevel 5>

    And afaik these two entries define the PDF-bookmark-level of the paragraph-format.

    So if this does not work with your files for an answer you should describe your workflow and the used FM-version (I am assuming FM 2022 v17.0.5.725) like:

    Step 1) Opening source file.

    Step 2) Opening target file.

    Step 3) Defining import settings as follow:

    ...

    A possible solution could be writing a script that changes the named MIF-entries using a list with paragraph-formats and the wanted entries for the named paragraph-format.

    Best regards

    Stephan

    I expect the feature @Winfried Reng will probably work, but I just noted that the documentations illustration was quite dated. We haven't had App and Kindle generation from Publish in years. But it is not really a feature I have any experience using to any extent. One learns something new always in this small corner of the Internet. 🙂

    I think this is the small corner of the internet between the refrigerator and the wall at my mother's house. Rareified air indeed.

    Hi,

    This is described in the online help, and I assume that you do this as described:

    https://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/using-framemaker/FrameMaker-2022/user-guide/frm_generating_output-pdf_import-pdf-settings.html

    Do you import the settings into the book file? Or into single files?

    When book file, then the settings will be imported into all files of the book.

    However, when you create a PDF from the book, only the settings of the first file are observed.

    Did you check that the book into which you import the PDF settings has all the paragraph formats from the file from which you import?

    Admittedly I find that this works not that reliably for me as well. I will try to check this more thoroughly. When I have time ...

    You can also copy the correct book file and replace the files in the book. However, then you also have to check the numbering and pagination.

    Best regards, Winfried

    To clarify: I'm familiar with importing at file and book levels, file to file, file to book, etc. I'm working on a book by book basis. Each one with a set of rigorously maintained files--all tags are the same in every file. Whether I import one file to another or one file to an entire book, the issue is the same: rather than getting a matching list in the Tags (Distiller) pane in the PDF print settings, I get a list that is similar but different. For example, out of 50 tags, 30 are setup correctly, but 20 vary between not set at the same level, not present in the setup list (but present in the pool of available tags list), ones not present in the setup list in the original file, but present in the setup list of the new file. And so on. I've even gone as far as to clear a files setup list entirely, then import the setup list. Still not correct. Very frustrating. I can do manual cleanup, but the total number of files over many books is in the 100s of files.
