Problem Getting Variables in Autonumbering to Display in Document

I've set up a series of paragraph styles to apply up to six levels of tiered section numbers in the following manner:

1.

   1.1

       1.1.1

etc.

For most of my documents, table titles are numbered sequentially beginning with "1" (e.g., "Table 1," "Table 2," etc.), but in some cases, I wish to number tables according to the paragraph in which they're referenced. Is there a system variable I can include in the autonumber field when specifying a style that will take for its value the subsection in which the table marker appears? Or is there another way to do what I want to do that allows the table number to autoupdate with the section number?

Thank you!

(Ah, my solution isn't perfect, as I'd have to create a table title style for each tier of my section numbering. So I think a variable solution is still ideal?)

An option might be to use a custom cross reference picking up the section numbering

"..but in some cases, I wish to number tables according to the paragraph in which they're referenced." - I'm not visualizing what that would look like at all. Can you give an example of how it would appear?

    Thanks, Jeff.

Instead of numbering tables and figures consecutively, my authors wish to number them according to the section in which they're referenced in the text. So if a table is called out in Section 3.5.7, they want the table number to be "Table 3.5.7."

Currently, I'm just typing the titles out by hand, which is a horrible solution, as nothing autoupdates with the corresponding section numbering. (For example, if a new section is added, and Section 3.5.7 becomes 3.5.8, the corresponding table number is still 3.5.7.)

    ...

Aaaaand I just realized I can use the autonumber string for my paragraph style in the table title style to get the section number I want (eureka?). 🙂

For the record, is there a way to get the same behavior using variables though?

    Thanks!

So I'd like to automate it by connecting the table number to the section number

(I should add that I've tried using the system variables available in the autonumber dialog. Only a handful are available: <$volnum>, <$chapnum>, <$sectionnum>, and <$subsectionnum>. None of these produce the behavior I'm looking for. I tried inserting <$paranum> and <$paranumonly> but they displayed as literal text and not a variable value. I know I'm misunderstanding how these work, but I'm not sure exactly how...
