Problem saving framemaker file as HTML

Hi,

I'm using framemaker 7.1.

I have imported a number of images into my framemaker document by reference. These images are located in a subfolder from my .fm file.

- When I try to save the framemaker file as html, all of my referenced images are created anew as png files in the main directory and do not link to the images in the subfolder.

- In the HTML setup section, the option "Copy Files Imported By Reference" is unticked.

It would take a lot of effort for me to manually edit my html files to link to the correct images.

cheers, any help would be much appreciated!

Nsoro, saving FrameMaker files as HTML regardless of how you have the “Copy Files Imported by Reference” switch positioned will not direct your html file to your actual graphic in the subfolder as you would like. Perhaps someone on here could explain the true purpose for this switch, but so far I’ve never found it to do anything useful.

Every time you create an html file from FM it will create a separate and less superior graphic that it will automatically link to. There is no way around this, well at least that I am aware of.

I have found this to be extremely frustrating in my line of work when using this product. For Adobe to allow the Framemaker product to degrade graphics upon export, and for that matter degraded during import into RoboHelp is incredibly complacent with its sub-par performance. Adobe should be embarrassed of this ongoing issue when Microsoft Word has done a better job with graphic integrity.

I hope you find some of this useful.

If you talk to some people at Adobe, they will tell you that the Save as HTML is a legacy, half-baked feature that has marginal use. I think the mistake is not that the graphic export and other things work poorly... the mistake is that it still appears in the menu as a functional item. I don't know of anyone who gets any practical use out of it, hence the popularity of RoboHelp, Quadralay products, and Mif2Go.

Russ, I agree with you on all points, but I have used the save as HTML with great successful with only a few minor issues. One of these issues is obviously the graphics.

More frustrating than the FM HTML graphic degrading is that when you import FM files by reference into RoboHelp the graphics are no better. I assumed that if I used RoboHelp to convert my FM files to HTML then the graphic quality would be maintained, I was wrong. This is why I stated that Adobe should be embarrassed. Ever since I’ve been working with FM ver5.5 (year 1998) and now FM ver8 (year 2008) and RoboHelp ver7 (year 2009) the graphics are still degraded.

I purchased RoboHelp ver7 in the Telecommunication Suite because Adobe boasted the major integration of FM and RoboHelp as your one stop shop for single sourcing. I was sorely disappointed with their claims when it came to graphics, once again. Seems they can’t improve this decade old coding in their program. No program will ever fulfill everyone needs, however this is an area I would expect improvements from Adobe to retain their customer base. Its not 1998 anymore and if they haven’t noticed this, maybe they need to get on a computer that has an Internet connection and see what their competitors are doing.

Many people find MIF2Go by omsys.com to provide better HTML export than the native Frame filters, especially from older FM versions.

There's a free eval version available...
