Problem with format changes to TOC and Index

I modify the reference page in order to change the TOC and the Index as I'm used to, but the changes do not apply to the work page. 
Did anyone else run into this problem? I'm clueless
I am running Version 17.0.1

    A good rule of thumb for generated files: format changes through the paragraph designer, etc. show up right away. Content changes such as changing building blocks, adding tab characters, etc., require a regeneration of the file.

    specifically with the tabs and doted line........... it just won't show up

    Most likely You will need to re-generate the TOC - only then you get the TAB characters ... in the body pages.
