Publishing pdf from Framemaker hangs at "mapping tags to marked content"

This just started happening across several different projects: Using the Publish routine, everything proceeds normally to the every end. Then the routine hangs with two progress bars show and gives a message "mapping tags to marked content." The only way out of this mess is to kill FM in the task manager. Conversely, the "Print Book to PDF" routine works fine.

I've never been clear on what the differences between these two routines are supposed to be, and the PDFs produced by the Print Book routine seem fine. What does the Publish routine offer that the Print Book to PDF routine doesn't? In other words, should I care about this?

Thanks in advance,

Bill

I'm assuming that your FM2022 is up to the latest patch level; then something in your content is causing the newer Publish engine to hang. Since printing to PDF works, you could try the selection inside the PDF Publish Settings to use Distiller to see if it works and if it's any faster. If it's still just as slow, then you're on the hunt (if you choose) to find what content is causing the hang action. Take a copy of your project and start tossing out content and publishing to PDF. Eventually you will narrow it down.

In FM2022, the Publish to PDF and Save As PDF both use the newer faster PDF generating engine. Print to PDF uses the older Distiller route. There is a setting in the Publish settings to force the Publish to PDF workflow to use Distiller settings.

I appreciate knowing the difference between the two methods of getting PDFs out of FrameMaker--thank you. But I'm still having the issue that publishing stops near the end of the process with the "mapping tags to marked content" message. This is a long book (about 460 pages) and has a lot of chapters (96). While I expect that this publishing job should take some extra time because of its size, the publishing process is still doing that hard hang, and it didn't always do that. The only way I can get PDF output is the Print Book routine, and that takes more than 30 minutes.
