Questions about Using Variables

Hello:

I'm having some problems trying to figure out how to link to a variable and I still have questions after searching the forum. What I want to be able to do is define a variable in the cover of my book (for the revision level) that is then used by the footer in the other chapter files in my book. Some of those chapter files are re-used in other books and I don't want to have to continue to re-set the variable because there are too many opportunities for error.

Is there a way to link to the variable in the cover file (which is unique to each book file) so that the footer is updated with the correct version level (as defined in the cover file) each time I regenerate the book? Would I use some sort of cross reference?

Thanks in advance for your input,

Kimberly

PS: I'm using unstructured Frame 8.0 p277 on Windows XP Pro.

    Kimberley,

Variables are specific to each file, except for a few system level variables and the chapnum & volnum variables (in FM8). If you aren't using the volnum in your books, then you can set this to text and enter the required content at the book level. Then use the <$volnum> variable in your footers.

The file will take on the properties of the current book's volnum definition wherever it is used, but always regenerate your books before outputting to be safe.
