Question

Registration marks and page size

Hi,

How do everybody deal with the different page size, when exporting a PDF for the web and one for the press? I only found that page size has to be entered by hand each time, with no way to rapidly choosing a different page format.

The problem in detail: my books are both printed, and published on the web. I use the PDF format for both targets. To do this, I use in both cases the File > Save as PDF command.

Now, in the dialog box that appears, the page size cannot be chooses, as in other pages, via a pop-up menu. You must input he page witdth and legth as raw numbers. Since the page size is different when saving for the web (say, A4) and when saving for the printer (say, A4 Extra for leaving space to the registration marks), each time you must print something you must re-enter the page size.

No problem with the A4. A4 Extra, well, is a bit more complicate to remember.

Is there an alternative (and quicker) way to do select the page format? On the Mac I went for the Print > PDF way, and if you chose the PDF instead of the PS as the output, you got an A4 (or in general the document's Page Size values); if you chose he PS (for printing), you got A4 Extra (Print Setup values).

Thank you,

Paolo

    Paolo,

When creating a PDF for print production, I would not recommend using the Save As PDF route. This is the same as turning "Generate Acrobat Data" on in the print dialogue. This adds all sorts of *useless* content for a print-purposed PDF.

Use the Print route and output to the AdobePDF printer instance. Then you will find it easier to select the correct paper size to allow for the Registration marks.

For creating specific "Forms". e.g. custom page sizes, use the Printers (and Faxes) system dialogue and select File > Server Properties. This will allow you to create custom page sizes (i.e. room for the registraiton and trim marks) for your system that all printer instances can then access.

Arnis, thank you for your answer. The problem with the Print > PDF way is that then I'll go back to the CMYK problems we discussed in another thread. I wonder if the color-matching issue will be a problem only onscreen, or also on print.

As for creating a page layout, I aldready discovered how to make it, but the problem is that you cannot use those preset formats in the Save as PDF dialog box. I would be happy to know from the developers why they decided not to use a pop-up menu to choose the preset paper formats, and forced manual entry each time.

Regarding the extra space for registration marks...

I do not believe it is necessary to create two PDFs, one for print and one for online, if you are using the same underlying page size (or sizes) in both. Create one PDF. When you print the PDF, you can turn on registration marks within Acrobat. I do not believe you need to turn them on within FrameMaker.
