How can I quickly and easily remove Paragraph and Character Styles in my Frame books?

We could do with a bit more information about your question … but one simple task is just to remove all unused definitions from an .fm file.

open a file
open the Paragraph catalog* (Window > Panel > ¶ Catalog)
click [Options]
select Delete all unused formats
click [OK]

You can apply the same technique, starting from the appropriate catalogue, to clean up character styles, table definitions and other crud that may have arrived with a non-FrameMaker document ;-}

Sorry if I'm being stupid, but where is [Options] in the Paragraph Catalog window/pane? I'm on Windows 7 with FrameMaker 9.

This feature was introduced in FM10. There have been useful features added (and bugs fixed) since FM9.

To remove the Tags from the Catalogs in a file, just use the Delete option at the bottom of the catalog list. However, this will not remove the tag name from any paragraph that has been so tagged (it will show with an asterisk in the status bar). If you have a standard template and you want to clean up all files in a book, then the easiest route would be to delete all tags in each file of a book to be cleaned up and then import the template to all of the book files. Caution: be careful of how the generated paratags in special files like TOC, IX are handled. If they may be in different templates.
