Is there a quick and easy way to have a running header using a system variable search back through other files in the book to find the parag. tag?

    No. You're restricted to the current file.

    If you're not using the <$marker1> or <$marker2> building blocks as part of your system variables in the running h/f entries, then consider adding these and seeding the desired content at the start of the file.
