It's the "Sigma Function" of the Equation Tool.

The index of summation sign had expanded when I was saving in PDF format, but it works well with the "Integration function".

Please help solving this problem

Thanks

vision1234, please let us know which specific version of FM, including the "pxxx" numbers as shown in Help > About.

Also, double-check that your Distiller settings have the correct path to FrameMaker's font directory; I've seen FM installations where the FM font directory did not get added to the Distiller font locations.

Thanks Arnis & Mike, let me try my best to explain the condition.

reply to Arnis: FM9, Save As PDF, Times New Roman Italic

and I've discovred something strange today.

    Case 1:

    1.    choose any printer setting (Canon / HP / Fax / Microsoft XPS Document Writer)

    2.    Try / not try micro-positioning

    3.    Try any fonts (Times / Adobe Garamond / Arial / Verdana)

    4.    Save As PDF

    5.    I can see the indexes expanded when generating the PDF file, but it reposited again after the generation had finished

    6.    It doesn't work

    Case 2:

    1.    choose Adobe PDF printer

    2.    indexes expanded instantly and didn't re-posit to where it was (no matter which fonts Times / Adobe Garamond / Arial / Verdana)

    3.    Try micro-positioning

    4.    Save As PDF

    5.    It works, the indexes stay where they were

It this case, it works! Is that mean I have to re-posit all equations the chapters?

    Case 2a:

    1.    choose Adobe PDF printer

    2.    indexes expanded instantly and didn't re-posit to where it was

    3.    Try micro-positioning

    4.    Save As PDF

    5.    It works, the indexes stay where they were

    6.    choose any printer setting (Canon / HP / Fax / Microsoft XPS Document Writer)

    7.    Indexes are aligned towards the summation sign

First, always have the default printer in FM set to the AdobePDF printer instance. Use Sundorne's SetPrint utility to ensure that this happens:

    http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm

Second, check your maker.ini file settings for the DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics option and make certain that is set to "On". It's in the [Fonts] section of the ini file.

Third, make certain that you are not inadvertently using any printer resident fonts in your FM documents. (Setting to the AdobePDF printer instance should help alleviate that.)

Try using the micro-positioning in the Equation editor to move the indexes down closer to the summation sign.

Which version of FM and how are you creating the PDF (SaveAs or printing to the AdobePDF printer instance)? Which font is being used for the math symbols?

If saving to pdf, make sure that the Adobe PDF printer instance in the default printer driver. Make sure that you do not have two different symbol fonts installed on  your computer.
