Question

Saving a book to Box results in ONE file making copies

So Box has this feature that if more than one person saves the same file at the same time, both copies are retained and the user's email address is added to the file name along with a copy # to distinguish it from other files.

Which is fine, except I am literally the only person in this company using FrameMaker. No one has this document open other than me. So why is it every time I try to save it, Box creates a new copy? Even if I rename it, the file gets renamed by Box immediately!

It does this with none of the other files in the book. I've already tried:

  • Renaming the file
  • MIF wash
  • Rebooting
  • Saving to my desktop then copying it over (gets renamed immediately)

I'm mostly sharing this to gripe about it, as I don't really expect anyone here to be familiar with the vagaries of Box. It's just ... sheesh. I'm busy, you stupid cloud storage. I do not need another problem to solve right now!

FrameMaker tends to be grumpy when saving to cloud storage locations. Specifically, I've had trouble with Dropbox functionality in the past. Can you go to a local or a network drive instead?

Since you're the only Fm user, have you turned off the Network File Locking?
(just eliminating disk activity that might be getting in the way)

If you need to work on multiple computers, can you save to an external (USB) drive?

Network File Locking was turned off long ago. I've temporarily saved it to my desktop and plan to see if I can get it to behave today. I mean, it is saved to Box, but using a filename that the book will never find, so that's no good.

    This is just pants.

We're supposed to move to SharePoint Online soon. I sure hope it isn't as annoying, but feel it will be.

ETA: I still can't copy the original file over to Box without it being renamed. I edited the name slightly (added 2 at the end) and it copied just fine. Stupid networks.
