Question

Searching your hard drive for a phrase in a FM document?

Hi there,

I seem to recall a Search tool that allowed you to search through your hard drive or a particular folder for a particular document that contained a specific phrase.  Has anyone heard of this?   It could just be wishful thinking on my part ...

We have hundreds of manuals created in FM and I need to look for a particular manual that contains a specific phrase - is there anything out there that would help me do this?

I am currently working with FM8 on Windows XP ...

Thank you,

Tina

Windows Explorer allows you to search for a text inside the documents, as well as the title. I am not sure how good it is when it comes to Frame files,  but it is quick and easy to try.

    Thanks Van!

That search feature doesn't work with FM files, but it does work with PDF docs which should help me - most of our manuals are saved to PDF for posting on the web.

Originally I thought that search tool was only for Word or text files, so I learned something.

This seems like something I used to do fairly often, though I vaguely remember there was a system setting involved. A quick web search turns up the following:

To configure Windows XP to search all files no matter what the file type, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP and then turn on the Index file types with unknown extensions option.

I've changed workplace recently, and it looks as though I've not yet configured the new PC to do this wider indexing – good time to try the advice I'm passing on!
