superscript/subscript asterisk in equation mode

Does anyone know how to get a superscript/subscript asterisk into an equation? Thanks.

Inspiring

In the equation palette,symbols page, click "Start string".

Double quotes appear.

Type the asterisk.

Double quotes disappear.

Click the End string or press Return.

Use the Micropositioning in the Postioning page to make it super- or subscript as required.
