Tab Positions on TOC Reference Page

Hello,

My Paragraph Designer settings are for some reason not being consistent for each included para tag in the Table of Contents. The apppearance of each one is set to :

<$paratext>[tab]<$chapnum>-<$pagenum>

with the tabs set to 6.5" R (w/ leader dots).

I've just added another para tag. When I try to set the exact same tab for this one as all the others, I get the message that "The tab position is too far to the right."

How could the same tab work fine for the other tags, and be too far to the right for this one? All settings for this tag are identical to the others.

FM's tab are absolute positions within the current text frame. Turn on your Rulers to see where the tabs are defined in your TOC. I suspect that your text frame for the TOC chapter may be smaller than the one you were using for the other document(s) in your book. FM will keep the original tab setttings defined in an existing paratag if the text frame is re-sized, however, if you try creating a new paratag and use the original value, FM will complain that it's out of bounds.

Normally, that would make sense; however, all of this is taking place within the single generated TOC file, on the TOC reference page.

I actually got the 6.5" R tab to work for the new para tag (AppendixTOC) by deleting the tag that had been automatically created.

Then I copied the reference definition for the para tag ChapterTOC and pasted it below.

Then I used this definition to create a "new" para tag, AppendixTOC.

Although this solved my immediate problem, it still doesn't explain why it happened in the first place.

The Text Frame on the Reference page may not be the same size as that defined on the Master/Body pages where the TOC paratags are actually presented. If you are formatting the new TOC paratag while on the Reference page, it will use the properties of the the TOC Reference text frame. Always define your paratags in the frame that they will displayed in.
