Question

Triggering master pages

I have found it helpful to trigger masterpage usage by defining paragraph types, defining them and the associated masterpage in the reference page map and simply adding a small text box to the page with the required paragraph inserted. Works like a dream, especially for landscape pages. Can someone tell me why this is a bad practice and suggest a better one? 🙂

Restating what Winfried mentioned, with your method, you are creating more work for yourself and introducing a potential for wrong page assignments.

Instead, create custom paragraph styles that trigger master page assignments. This will allow FrameMaker to manage the page assignments as your content expands and contracts.

    Isn't that what I did?

It sounds like you put an extra text frame on the page with invisible text to allow the mapping table to work.

If you just map to the paragraph styles in your content you'll create faster and not have to double-check master page assignments down the road.

Hm. I would say this is an approach which works.

    However:

If the content changes, the master page will still be assigned to this page, although the content for this master page has moved to the previous or next page.

If there is a regular paragraph, e.g. a heading or something like that, you can also use this to trigger the master page. You can also create a unique paragraph format for this heading.

Then the master page would move with the content.

I use both. But for example, on my landscape pages there are only images and captions. The latter exist on regular body pages as well. So my LandscapeHiddenParagraph works fine. Of course you may need to make changes as content changes.
