ugly pdf

For some reason, when I make a .pdf of my Framemaker 9 document, some stuff doesn't come out right.  For example, any place where I've used an Arial Narrow font, it looks like Times New Roman in the pdf.  If I use the Arial Font, it looks good in the pdf, but in order to get the effect of the Arial Narrow in the pdf, I have to use Arial with a stretch value of 90% in my Frame document.

And also, some of the colors don't look very good in the pdf.  In the Frame document, they look the way I want them to, but when I make the pdf, they end up looking a little muddier.

What's up with this?

When using FM9 and saving as PDF, make sure that "Convert CMYK Colors to RGB" is turned ON. If this box is turned off, various problems may be encountered, including font-related problems.

[If this solves your font problem and colors are still not what you expect them to be, there is a setting in the maker.ini that can help]

How are you making the pdf? Save As or printing to the AdobePDF printer instance? With fonts, it's often that you don't have the AdobePDF printer set as your default in FM. You might also check out the MS hotfix that solved a lot of messed up pdf problems (search the forum or check out the Adobe blogs for the link).

You might have a problem with your Acrobat conversion settings. In these settings, you can specify which fonts to embed (and you may need to embed Arial Narrow). There are also some color conversion settings. You may wish to read this: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Acrobat/9.0/Standard/WS58a04a822e3e50102bd615109794195ff-7f14.w.html

Wow!  Who would've thought that a colors setting would affect font appearance?  But that did the trick.  I set that conversion (and I also set Adobe PDF as my defalut printer in Frame) and now the pdfs look fine.

    Thanks, all.

The color setting probably didn't because that doesn't have anything, or much, to do with fonts.

Setting the Adobd PDF printer as the system default probably did because that has everything to do with fonts. ;-  )

As Jeff said, if you're working in an XP environment, you should apply the Microsoft HotFix because it applies to all PostScript printers.

-- it applies to all PS printers, including the logical PDF printer that you're now using.
