Question

Uneven Word Spacing in Hindi FM Manual

We have a Hindi manual created in FM 11.00 and it seems the font Nirmala UI is not supported by the Application, thereby causing uneven space between words. Please advise how to fix it.

You can also adjust the Word spacing in each paragraph using the Advanced tab.

Also, depending upon how the font is internally specified, it may also trigger FM's Asian settings. There are some spacing contols for this as well in the Paragraph designer:

Hi Arnis,

Since the spacing is Uneven, correct in some places wrong in others, and since the manual is a big one, it would be difficult to adjust it with this settings.

Hi Sathyan,

Those settings should be globally applied in the Paragraph Designer to the catalog entries. Also check to see if Kerning is enabled and avoid using the "Allow Automatic Letter Spacing" option.

Otherwise, if the spacing still is irregular, then the issue is within the font itself. FM just uses the glyph dimensions and the internal kerning tables to position the characters as prescribed in the font.

Have you tried using a different font to see if the spacing issues persist? If not, then that would tend to confirm that the issue is in the Nirmala UI font.

Do you notice this problem in the FrameMaker file or in the PDF

or both?

Only when you use this particular font or also with other fonts?

What's the setting of the option DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics in maker.ini

in the FrameMaker installation directory and in your personal maker.ini

in the Roaming directory?

Best regards
