Unusual numbering issue

Hi -
I need to set up document numbering in an unusual way.

I need the pages to autonumber normally but to be able to apply a different master page or style to the occasional page to get the previous page number followed by a line or long dash.

Ex.
1
2
3
3. __________
4
5
5. __________
6

and so on

I've tried making variations on standard building blocks but cannot get this to work.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
-Kirsten

Since it's undocumented, I assume that there is nothing in any of the Help or other sources that explain it at all.

Can you give a brief idea of what it is/does and how to open it up so someone could toy around with it?

    Kirsten,

It sounds as if you're trying to kludge rev/update/point page numbering.

If so, it'd be easier to work with the (limited) existing Frame tools. There's a undocumented freeze pagination feature built in that works, and Rick Quatro has developed some FrameScripts that improve the functionality. If this is what you're trying to do, contact Rick at frameexpert.com for some info....

    Kirsten:

My first thought is that FrameMaker supports the identification of separate autonumbering counters ala "N:" where "N" is a case-sensitive (i.e., "N" does not equal "n") alphabetic character that specifies a unique autonumbering counter.

With that in mind, would it work to (a) create a separate paragraph style for the numbered items that require the long dash, then (b) in that style reference the autonumbering counter in conjunction with "<n=>________________"?

In other words, repeat the value of a given autonumber in a separate paragraph style and suffix that instance with your dash.

Otherwise, I personally know of no other way to inform FrameMaker that a given autonumber requires repeating AND should have a dash suffixed to that repeated number...(?)

    Cheers & hope this helps,
    Riley
