Update References is crashing Fm 17.0.5

Even after resetting preferences, and with a blank document, Fm crashes when using Edit > Update References to update Text Insets.

Anyone able to successfully use that feature with 17.0.5?

Returning to work after a 6-month hiatus, and am seeing this exact error across the board on ALL FM files (v17.0.5 running on Windows 11). Hard application crash with partially-drawn dialogue box and 17054 error message window. Even on a single page file with no imported or embedded graphics or text insets.

Am downloading previous versions of Frame so I can uninstall and see if this fixes it.

Ridiculous that there has been zero action or communication after 4 months. Software that costs $900 per year per seat shouldn't be abandonware.

Sorry @dharding1 but you had the workaround from Matt there already. Unless there was some new announcement about a patch, nothing would have changed. Nobody knows if there's been any action because the wheels of the FM engineering team are an inscrutable  mystery to us forum people.

Hi, have you solved it? Is there any news?

I've not heard about a workaround, other than using the Book Update function, rather than the Update References dialog.

For the time being, I've chosen to use 17.0.4.

Another work-around: Close and re-open the document.

    Hi all,

it is a long time (now 2 months at least) this issue has been raised.

Is there a way that someone from ADOBE will answer give a feedback to it?

I also checked tracker, and noone seems is taking care about it.

@Matt-Tech Comm Tools did you received any feedback from ADOBE?

My company works on a DOD contract, with a DOD Framemaker license. It is not a simple feat for us to go backwards with loading previous software versions. We reported this through the DOD office-I even sent a copy of the 15131 ticket. Adobe responded with Bug #FRMAKER-15122 has been logged for further investigation and will be addressed in the next FrameMaker update. No workaround was offered and we weren't able to speak with Adobe directly. It does seem that using Update Book seems to update the references.

So, to clarify, with 17.0.5, were you able to get text insets and cross-references updated using the book, but not the Update References dialog?

When i selected update book, I had each of the 6 blue boxes checked: Numbering, Cross-Ref, Text Inset, OLE LInks, Mini TOC, Book Variables. It updated with no crashing. When using edit>update references, i tried selecting a different dialog box each time and each time it crashed. Hope that answers your question.

Does anyone have access to the 17.0.4 installer?

I have a client who needs to get 1/2 dozen writers back up and running.

Maybe they are available on the prerelease forum?

I'm running into this issue along with one or two of my other team members. However, the remainder of my team (about 4 people) is not having this problem. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the software but that didn't fix it. One thing I noticed is that FrameMaker is only drawing part of the Update References dialog box. I tried to upload a screen cap of the dialog box, but I suspect our proxy is blocking the upload.  I've been doing the same thing as the other poster, closing and re-opening the file. However, some of our files are large and take time to open, especially for those who work from home and don't have the same network speed as our corporate server.  I'm hoping Adobe fixes this issue soon, we use many cross-references and we often the Update References option.

If some people are having the issue & some aren't then there's got to be some difference between the working vs. non-working machines. Are they using the same files? Are they all running the same point version of FM2022? Are the ones who have an issue working remotely and are trying to access the content across the VPN to remote servers? Maybe copying the content locally might improve the situation as a test.

My test, on a local machine:

Fresh install of 17.0.5 and new Blank, Portrait Document. Navigate to Edit > Update References. Select either Text Inset option. Result = Crash

Fresh install of 17.0.3 and new Blank, Portrait Document.Navigate to Edit > Update References. Select either Text Inset option. Result = Success in selecting options in dialog

I've run into the same thing. The workaround I've found for standalone files (to update cross references at least) was to save the file, close the file, and reopen it. It seems to update the references upon opening. Update Book works just fine on files within a book in 17.0.5.

Update References definitely needs to be fixed though so it can be run normally.

I'm glad to hear you can update by reopening the files!

Unfortunately, I created another post and tracker item that explains that my files don't update insets upon opening.

That is how I figured out that the Update References wasn't working in the first place. 😞

Yes, it works with me. I just checked a document using insets. Not a very extensive test though, as I don't have a lot of customers using that feature. If it may be of any help, I can send you the project files. When using one of the earlier versions of FM I discovered that instabiliity might sometimes be caused by old tmp files. It might be worth a try deleting all *.tmp files.

I deleted the temp files, and still the same crash.

I reinstalled Fm 17.0.3, and it worked.

I updated to Fm 17.0.5, and it crashed once again 😞

    @pulkitn any thoughts?
