Question

Updating a book, Book Error Log customisation?

Hello ,

When I Update Book, Framemaker produces a Book Error Log.  In addition to the errors it is currently picking up, I want Framemaker to pick up any cross-references that do not have a source file open.

Does this make sense?

Did you know the new ExtendScript: Logging Messages?
You can switch on the FM messages, but Finalyser ignores that and send the messages in this document.

It may make sense for your use case but it isn't what the Book error log is for.  There's nothing "wrong" with a source file not being open and is in many cases desirable that it not be. When you update a book, its only going to check to make sure you don't have any broken XREFs. If you want to make sure all source files are open, when you do book update, then you may need a script.

I had a feeling this would be the first answer

You are of course right; perhaps I should explain my problem and try to find a better way around it.  Here goes...

I create bespoke manuals for a product that varies in various figures, text and numbers.  Each book has a 'worksheet' which cross-references all text and numbers which are variables.

For each manual I copy the last one, paste it in a new folder and change the details in a worksheet.

For some reason though, there are some cross-references which keep a link with the old 'worksheet'.

Any ideas as to either what I'm going on about, or a solution?

Hi Bowen,

I am having trouble understanding your use case. I'll need some clarification.

  • What's a "bespoke" manual?
  • What is this worksheet for? What is its purpose?
  • I don't understand why you copy the last one, paste it in a new folder and change details in a worksheet. Why don't you just use a single framemaker file, share that file across all the books, and then use conditional text so that only the content appropriate for that manual is shown when you print to PDF?
