Question

Updating image captions in a book

Hi All,

I have created two styles for image captions:

1. The first image caption, for which i have added the following content in the Numbering tab:

F:Figure <n=1>

2. The second image caption, for which i have added the following content in the Numbering tab:

F:Figure <n+>

My first chapter has only one image, so i just apply the first image caption. No problem there.

The problem i am facing is that the image captions do not update when i apply the second image caption to the first image in the second chapter. So all the first images in the subsequent chapters start with "1" and do not auto-update from the previous chapter.

Appreciate the help. I'll be happy to provide more details regarding the problem.

Thanks in advance!

    F:Figure <n=1>

    F:Figure <n+>

Do these have separate Paragraph format names, or are you doing one as an override?

Normally, there's no need to even define an <n=1> variant for captioning. <n> starts at zero, so by default <n+> will be 1 for the first caption, and if your book numbering is set appropriately, will just continue across the whole book.

Book numbering can be set in both component files and for the book. Our practice is to set it for the components, and set to book to Read from File.

I have created different paragraph styles..

I have tried using the same style using <n+> for all images, but since that was not working i tried using a different style for the first image.

So are you saying that i need to set "Read From File" for all my chapters? Cause i've just tried doing that, and the images are not getting updated.

I'd expect the combination of F:<n+> to run smoothly through all chapters; I've always used the .book (as Jeff is hinting) to set paragraph numbering to Continue; I've frequently remarked (with FM10, anyway) that FM sometimes updates numbering all by itself and sometimes has to be kicked with Update book. Reading your post again, it describes more or less what I'd expect to see while I was actually creating content; my perception or mental model is that the second chapter may not "know" what the last number used in the first chapter was until you've done an update. Similarly, adding a figure in chapter 2 will have no effect on figure numbers in chapter 3 until you update.

Hope you manage to resolve this issue; when it's playing the game, FM numbering is one of the things I not only appreciate but positively enjoy.

How have you set the numbering in the book?

For the first chapter i have set "Restart Paragraph Numbering" and for the following chapters i have set "Continue Numbering from Previous Paragraph in Book".
