what about setting the page numbering on a bunch of files that are used in multiple Bookfiles?

I have an FM 10 bookfile called  BookfileA with 20 chapters. In chapter 1, I set the chapter numbering to start at 1 and the page numbering to start at 1. In chapters 2 through 20, I set the chapter numbering and the page numbering to increment from the previous chapter. So far, so good, but here's the problem. .....

In BookfileB, chapter 1 is a different file, and the original chapter 1 is moved to chapter 2. But BookfileB's chapter 2 is still self-resetting its chapter and page numbering to 1.

Because of the unusual fact that BookfileB has an extra chapter, do I have to monkey with the chapter numbering every time I want to generate one variant or the other? Is there something about numbering that I don't realize?

Set the numbering and pagination of each file within each book file, not in the individual files. Book settings trump file settings.

Regenerate/update the books every time you need to output them, as you may not know which book updated any common files last.

Arnis, I'm new at this FM thing .... are you telling me that opening a chapter file and setting the number characteristics is DIFFERENT than highlighting the file in the bookfile and right-clicking and setting the numbering without opening it? :-)

Yes. The book file retains the setting info and applies it to the chapter file(s). This is why you need to always do a book update before publishing to ensure that any common files are set to their appropriate settings for the current book context.

You also should do any variable and formatting updates to the book before this re-generation step as a standard step in your workflow.
