We are looking for a web authoring, or content management tool, other than Robohelp, to publish and maintain Framemaker files online.  Any suggestions?

By CMS, do you mean what software should you use to produce your electronic output from Fm?

In Fm12, you can do the lion's share of formats directly from the app, including Responsive HTML5. The process is analogous to what you're currently doing with Rh, so if you already have that set up, you will have a few admin advantages to maintaining that workflow.

Other options exist like:

  • mif2go (as Arnis mentioned)
  • webworks
  • import each time into Flare

and each have their own issues with setup, maintenance, and workflow. Having already invested in s/w and setup, I doubt you'd be happier by reinventing the wheel.

Background question: when you say "publish FM files on line", do you mean:

  • publish .pdfs made from FM content
  • publish WebHelp or some other format with navigation
  • publish .html pages
  • something else I haven't thought of <g>

Also, which end of the operation is more important to you: displaying content on line or preparing content in FM?

Currently we take Framemaker files and then use Robohelp to convert them to html. Then that is published online. Meaning it becomes the website content. Its a lengthy process that doesn't convert well.

I'm looking for a better tool to take those Framemaker files and convert them to html. Or any better way to convert those Framemaker files and publish it as online content.

  • publish WebHelp or some other format with navigation
  • publish .html page
  • more important to display content on line

btw, this content in online Help, for a specific product, hundreds of pages.

Thanks for your comments.

You could look at using Omni Systems' mif2go took to convert the FM files to Help or web pages (see: http://www.mif2go.com/) You can considerably fine-tune the output, add your own javascript, completely customize the CSS, etc. There's an initial configuration for the type of conversion required, but once that's done, it's just simple point-and-click conversions.
