I have been wondering what happend to the Patternstream database publishing tool? The site is still up, but it does look somewhat un-maintained. I did some design solutions years ago involving Patternstream and remember it as a nice tool. Is FrameMaker not used for database publishing anymore?

Sure did google, but stuff like this: http://www.patternstream.com/blog/ does look a wee bit odd. No info about pricing and the latest version says 2020 or 2021. But a website is not the company, which is why I was asking :-)

I worked with this years ago and I don’t recall them ever listing pricing. The website is definitely a mess, with bad coding and missing info (even some lorem ipsum filler text!).

I wouldn’t be surprised if the company got bought out by another company just trying to milk it for cash. Not sure if I would trust them with.

(The InDesign version is also 5 years old too.)

Was that like that Mirano (?) database thing that Arnis Gubbins used to talk about?

No, Miramo was a totally different tool (and company) from Patternstream. I am currently supporting the latest Miramo applications, which allow you to go directly from structured content, such as DITA, directly to high-quality PDF output. It is super fast. It also has a designer component that allows you to design pages using a familiar template interface with master pages, styles, variables, etc.

I talked to them a few months ago and they are still in business. I am pretty sure they have a solid client base so I am not sure how much marketing they still do. I played with it years ago and was impressed with its feature set. Some of these applications are limited by FrameMaker’s mediocre performance. They may be doing some InDesign output along with their FrameMaker support.
