Question

Where are the "embedded graphics" files kept?

I have a whole list of FM chapters (inherited) where the images were embedded. Obs. I would prefer to import them by reference. If I could find the files, I could do this.

@Barb Binder Thank you, I was unaware of this fact until this very morning, when i read about it in another thread (really don’t get into the weeds with Word much). I suspect that will be my best option.

Hi @P. Coo : I don’t have any experience extracting copied images from FrameMaker but I can say from experience that extracting them from a .docx file is quick, easy and reliable. Just work on a copy of the file!!

Objects that are copy-into-document are stored in the .fm file. You can see them if you save the .fm as MIF to .mif. In FM 18.x, these are in the <Aframe section, as <Frame <ID # code blocks.

An import-by-reference will contain a few lines of:
    <Import…
declarations. I’ve written scripts that find and refactor these, including gathering them all for sending to translators (something FM has tools for now).

A copy-into-document is apt to be a huge swath of text, including a readable metadata and wall-o-hex for raster objects.  Extracting these from the MIF may not be practical, although there may be aftermarket tools that can do it.

When I’ve had the problem, I’ve just rendered the document to PDF at high resolution, and exported or screen-shot the images from the PDF. PDF pages can also be deconstructed in Illustrator, preserving the image’s original data structures to a great degree (esp. if cropped at import to FM). Save raster to PNG, and vector images to PDF, EPS or SVG, depending on content and proposed workflow.

According to the help - stuff like that is inside the binary files themselves. See this old thread for faster ways to get them out -

It might be a useful bit of background - the Framemaker files were imported from Word files. I know I could save them from those Word files, I’m just trying to come up with a faster way.

    Hi @P. Coo :

Are you aware that a .docx file is actually a .zip file? You can make a copy of the Word doc, change the extension from .docx to .zip, and extract the files. The image files will be in the Media folder.
