Question

why do I have this override ?

Hello,

I send you a video of my problem.

In this FM file the first line contains a variable, and the second line contains normal text.

In this FM file, at the second line, I have applied a character style (“Essai style”), and then I tried to change the font for “Essai style”, but when I “update style” in “Essai style” it says me that I have an override.

I would like to understand what is the cause of this override.

    Hi @pierret18811376 :

Yes, that’s me from ~2 years ago! The forum update deleted my profile and I hurried to get something back up and found this pic first. My professional headshots are from 10-15 years ago and I’m old now so they seem wildly inaccurate. At least my gray hair is visible sticking out of the hat. 😂 I’ll find another one—or the old one—when things quiet down.

The override situation is odd but hopefully a short term issue. Once you get the definition squared away, you won’t see it anymore. In the meantime, just keep clicking Remove Overrides when it comes up because as I said the other day… overrides are bad!

There was one more thing I wanted to address, but it's been a chaotic couple of days. You talked wanting two documents, one seemed to be a control document and in the other you wanted content to fill in automatically. That post is gone for a few weeks but someone (Winfried? Bob? Jeff?) suggested variables and I also thought that was your best option so was glad to see you chose that path.

What I don't recall is anyone explaining to you how this will work once you are all set up, and not sure how familiar you are with File > Import > Formats > Variables. You can update the variables in a single file and then import all of the variables from that file to another file, or import all of the variables from that file to all the selected files in a book window. Any file can be your control document, and any other file(s), can receive the updated variable definitions from that document.

This is worth playing with before you get into your real documentation, just like you're doing with the character styles so that you don’t make a mistake that matters.

    @Barb Binder

I have seen that you have changed your avatar (is it you on the picture ?).

Ok, I have read carefully your advises, and followed all the recommendations, but I still have an override each time I “update style”.

    — During the override :

    — after clicking on “Remove override button” :

Ok, I think there is something odd going on with overrides—they mostly show up when I edit the character style definition (but not always). @Winfried Reng, I have Pierre’s document to play with.

    Pierre, here is my recommendation.

    1. Delete the one occurrence of the adresse variable from line 1.
    2. Edit > Select all and click on Default ¶ Font to remove all character styles from the text.
    3. Delete the Essai style character style.
    4. Click in the margin (which will set the window to as is) or choose Commands > Set Window to As Is and add Essai style back in. This time only select the properties you actually want, i.e., Family, color, weight. The other properties will be blank or will show the words As Is. Checkboxes will show a - or a square but not a check unless you enable it on purpose. Click Create style. (The other properties reappear but are not part of the style definition.)

    5. Add the variable back to the end of line 1. It should be formatted correctly.
    6. Practice adding it a few more times.

    To edit the definition:

    1. Open Character Designer
    2. Open the Style menu at the top and click on Essai Style. When you select the style name from the menu, the As Is settings reappear.
    3. Change something
    4. Update Style and then click on Remove Overrides, if it appears.

That should update all occurences. Yes, there may be an extra click to remove overrides, but then the style behaves as expected.

    Hi Pierre,

It would be much, much easier for us, if you would show text symbols (View menu).

Now I could reproduce your issue.

Apply a character format at the end of a paragraph including the paragraph symbol.

Then change anything in the Character Designer and click Update Style.

FrameMaker will show an error message: Some characters use format overrides.

The fix is simple: Do not select the paragraph symbol, when you want to update a character format.

    Best regards, Winfried

    Hi Winfried,

You advised me to do not select the paragraph symbol when I want to update a character format. I have done excatly the same, but I have always an override :

Hi Pierre, Winfried is correct. Your issue in the video is that you’ve inadvertently selected the paragraph (pilcro) symbol, and thus you are modifying the paragraph tag at the same time you are updating the character tag.

If you create a new doc, and redo this with a word in the middle of a sentence, you should have better luck.

I also strongly recommend that you do not use the Apply buttons in the para and character designers. While the buttons are functional, you may accidentally do things you do not want to do.
