Will the <chapnum> variable work in FrameMaker 7.1?

I am designing a template meant for a very old version of FrameMaker, 7.1. And I have a memory of <chapnum> not being part of FrameMaker 7.1. Is that right or does my memory play tricks with me?

    <$chapnum> is in the system variable list on page 207 of the FM 7.0 printed manual.

    Avoiding all Unicode (any codepoint above \xFF) might be a bigger challenge.
