Question

Windows Explorer Crashing

I was recently upgraded to FM9, as part of the Technical Communications Suite 2. I also got a new computer with Vista on it. Ever since I have regularly had Windows Explorer crash on me. There doesn't seem to be any one thing that triggers it. Same for two colleagues with identical set ups. Other colleagues with Vista but no Tech Comm Suite are not having this problem. Has anyone else come across this problem or have a solution?

Have you looked at the TechNote on the TCS and Vista issues:? See: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/408/kb408338.html

Stuart, could you compare the way you and your colleagues open FM and/or chapters? I suspect that you'll find that the crashes are due to differences in the way you open FM files.

In FM9 9.02p237 on WinXP I am getting crashes from FM when FM (any version) is not open and I double-click on an .fm file to open it by clicking on the filename in  Windows XP file explorer.

Immediately after the crash, though (w/out rebooting) I can open FM by using the start menu or the quick access tray icon and then from within FM do File > Open and choosing the file.

I've that this same thing happen in earlier FM versions too. Never in any other app.

I have 4 gigs of RAM, and I've got several other apps open although none that are particularly memory-intensive. I may have previously opened FM once during this same session (i.e. since I last rebooted) earlier today.

I've always found that a reboot "cures" the problem for a period of at least several hours, during which double-clicking on files works just fine. And then there's the FM crash abyss and I know it's time to reboot.

    Arnis and Sheila,

Thanks for your help with this.

Arnis, I have tried the steps listed in the article you linked to but they have made no difference. Very frustrating!

Sheila, I have had no problem with FM9. It is Explorer that crashes, although we now find that Paint also crashes a lot, but only when you try to use save As..

I have now submitted a similar request to the Adobe Support site. Hopefully they can shed some light on this.

    Thanks once again.
