ZapfDingbats displays incorrectly on screen FM8 - correct in PDF

After much frustration – trying a few things and making the situation worse – I found a solution on a forum related to Zapf Dingbats not working at all in Framemaker. Someone suggested getting a dingbat patch that Adobe released for Frame 5.x, found here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=515&fileID=515

After deleting (or rather, moving the font files to another folder so as not to lose anything), I reinstalled the new .pfm file I had downloaded from Adobe into the C:\PSFONTS\PFM folder and also C:\WINDOWS\Fonts folder. Now the font displays correctly on screen and also when I distill to a PDF.

I still have no idea why Frame would substitute Wingdings for ZapfDingbats, but the main problem has been solved. Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

Because they display correctly in the PDF, Distiller can see and work with the correct font... which makes me wonder if you have the Adobe PDF set as your default system printer. It sounds as if you don't, which means that a font that's resident on a physical printer but not on your system could be invoked for the display.

Make the Adobe PDF printer the system default printer, restart Frame, and see if that fixes it.

You may also want to look in your fonts folder and see if you have more than one version of ZapfD installed --  obviously there should only be one, and Open Type format if you have a choice.

I seem to remember a fix that involved editing the Frame init file, but first see what happens if you make the Adobe PDF the default printer and of course make sure you have the latest update to Frame 8.
