Creating a Mask

When I am creating a mask in the Empty Layer Mask window, I don't seem to have any control over the brush - is it some preset value for  all ELM windows? I would like to be able to set all the parameters -

    type of brush

    color

    opacity etc., etc.,

for the brush in the ELM window just like I can when using a pixel layer. Is this possible?

OK - I just played with the brush settings and realized that yes - when using a brush for masking - I do have control over the choice of brush so I can get the solid color after all by choosing an appropriate brush. Sorry about that - I should have played with the settings a bit more before posting. However, one thing does remain and that is - I still can't choose the color for the masking brush - all I have is the above color. It's somewhat academic since knowing that I can mask with a solid color, resolves my issue but it would still be nice to paint the mask with the color of my choice.

I tested both on the Ipad and on Windows and I can confirm my masks are black with no options to change the colours.
HOWEVER, it is possible that you have the "red overlay" set up...

untick it in the layer masks actions, and you'll get the strokes black, as I have.
I completely forgot the red overlay thingy.

The brush used to create a mask on Fresco should be the same (with the exception of not holding any colour and not being a vector or live brush) than any other brush. You can change the size, and all the usual parameters a standard brush does

for example in my previous screenshot, I created a layer with some standard pencil, and then created an empty mask, and filled it with some halftone brush strokes, of which I could change the size, opacity, smoothing and angle.

Of course you cannot change the colour (Masks are only black and white).

and you can only use a pixel layer on a mask.

What you can do on the layer itself remains unchanged, whatever happens to the mask.

Can you post a screenshot and explain what exactly happens when you try to change the size of the brush for example?
Also Windows or Ipad?
and sorry for my ignorance What is an ELM window? 🙂

sorry, ELM just stands for an Empty Layer Mask

You are right about being able to control the size of the brush used for masking - I used 80  40  20 for the above and by laying the pencil almost flat, I got that really wide stroke on the right. So yes, I do have control over the size of the masking brush which I didn't realize I could do before.

However, as you can see in the screenshot, I am limited to the color that you see here. I can't change the color used for masking, which I would like to be able to do. More importantly - the brush is grainy and unless you brush repeatedly, it's not a solid color. How can I get a brush that gives me a solid color with the first pass of the brush?
