3d and Materials - Layers and Groups question - Argh!

Hello,

Tough to articulate this challenge with using the 3d and materials feature without showing my issue via Zoom, but here goes.. !

So I have these objects in different colors and shapes that are closely knit together. Yet I want to do a different 3d effect with each shape. When I group, they remain all locked together on the same layer, or in 3d terms, the same 'plane', but I can't isolate each shape to do a unique 3d effect. It changes for all of them.

Now when I ungroup these shapes, I can apply unique 3d effects for each. BUT.. they are all layered one on top of the other in 3d space, and on different 'planes'.

Driving me bananas!

Correct answer Monika Gause

What's a good 3d software for dummies - Adobe Dimension or Substance 3D. Or something else?

If you just want to arrange (and not punch holes or the like), give Adobe Dimension or Substance Stager a try. I found Substance Stager slightly easier to use, but Dimension is included in the Creative Cloud.

The modeler is still in beta: https://www.adobe.com/products/substance3d-modeler.html but if you're curious, try it out.

That's basically the downside of 3D in Illustrator pretty well summed up.

Actually it's not 3D, but 2.5D.

You need a real 3D application.

That's it then eh? Adobe needs to change the feature to '2.5d and Materials'. Let's start a petition. 😐

It's still a vector application and not a 3D application.

If you want to build in a 3D world you will have to bite the bullet and learn whichever application is appropriate for your situation. You could try Adobe Dimension.
