3D not working on placed PNGs

Hello,

I placed 3 PNGs but every time I try to add any 3D effect, I receive the error that it works only on some object types. Is this a new update or something? I saw it work in an online course. I tried everything, sepparately, embed, linked, grouped, expand appearance. I just keep receiving the same error. Help please? (same goes for JPGs).
