A couple dozen recent .ai and .psd files now have zero bytes

Been working on these files over the last several months and all of a sudden they have zero bytes and are not open-able in Illustrator or Photoshop. I'd like to know if anything can be done about it, as they represent many many hours of work.

    Interestingly, these same files in the Illustrator file dialog show what I assume to be the proper file size.

    Which system, which version?

    Where did you save them?

    Is there a backup?
