Adding a Border/Padding Around an AI Image Containing Other AI Images

I am attempting to add a border/padding around a graphic image. I found this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyJEliFP_HQ) which demonstrates exactly what I want to achieve, except that my image includes another AI graphic as part of its composition. For instance, in the video, if the harp were created and imported from another AI file.

Here is the piece of artwork. It's very simple, but I use it in different sizes and change colours and it's easier to change a master copy then to recreate it in a document over and over again. It also allows multiple documents that use it to all change at once.
