Adding effects to background of seamless patterns

Hi,

I'm new to Illustrator and Photoshop. I am currently trying to design patterns for fabric printing. How do I add effects to background colours of patterns and make them seamless in my pattern? Thanks in advance

    I'm not an expert at creating patterns in Illustrator but I've learned that the way to create seamless patterns the easiest is to use the Object > Pattern > Make feature, described below:

    This method, available since Illustrator CS6 creates seamless patterns easily, with a lot of flexibility.

    I found if I add an effect to a pattern while in this pattern editor like I have below where I added a roughen effect, Illustrator will by default expand the expanded art when saving your pattern swatch:
