Question

Adding gradient effect to stroke not happening

Hello everyone. I keep trying to add gradient to a stroke, but all that does is turn the stroke into black. I watched numerous tutorials, none have helped me. It would help me A LOT if someone explained this to me. I use Illustrator cc 2015.

Thanks in advance!

Please show us a screenshot of your stroke (selected) and the appearance panel open.

It's likely that your stroke is a calligraphy brush.

That one is a different brush, but generally gradients won't work with brushes.

You can achieve the same look by using a variable width stroke. First delete the brush from the stroke by clicking on Basic in the brushes panel. Then apply a variable width profile e.g. via the stroke panel. Then you can also apply a gradient to the stroke.
