Adjust character spacing in type on a path, ascender aligned

Hi

I am using Illustrator CS3 to type on a path. See the image below. On the left is how the text was originally typed with Spacing (in Type on a Path Options) set to 0.

On the right is what happens when I try to change the Spacing to anything but 0.

What am I doing wrong? How can I fix this?

Thanks!

Instead of using the defective spacing settings in the Type on a Path Options you may check if setting the tracking in the Character palette will work for you.

As it happens, I still have a working copy of CS3, and I see the same results as yours. As far as I can tell, the short-term solution (and possibly the long-term, as well) is to click on the path with the Type Tool to insert the cursor, double-click to select the text, and type the word(S) in, in reverse order. Not the ideal solution, but it's the one I see.
