Adobe Illustrator black artboard

I'm currently using Adobe illustrator and im wondering why choosing a black background for the artboard obscures all images. Is it because the artboard isn't present when saving or is it a problem only I'm experiencing?

Yes I have overprint view on yet all I see is black. Changing the Artboard

color works for every thing except black or anything near black

    Turn overprint preview off.

Is this for a print job? Take note of what the option says: it isn't setting a background colour, it is simulating coloured paper. Printing with non-opaque inks on black paper will get you (something close to) black.

In what way are you choosing a black background?
