Adobe Illustrator clipping mask

In Adobe Illustrator, I want to keep a background photo and crop out an outlined shape. I have a Rhino model render image that I want to show through a masked shape in the photo. I tried making a clipping mask, but it keeps the backgound photo within the outlined shape - I want the inverse.  Thanks for your help.

emarti,

You can create a rectangle to fit the photo, then place the cutout shape on top, then select both and Pathfinder>Minus front or Object>Compound Path>Make.

Either way you end up with a Compound Path, then select that and the photo and Ctrl/Cmd+7 to create the Clipping Mask.

Or you can use an Opacity Mask to knockout that part of the photo as follows.

Give the knockout path a black fill, then in the Transparency palette (flyout) click Make (Opacity) Mask with bot Clip and Invert Mask unticked (in the main Transparency palette).

You are welcome, emarti.

My guess is that you used the Compound Path Clipping Mask, which is still simple in this case.

Thank you so much! It worked beautifully! You saved me a lot of time from
continuing to struggle with this on my own.
