Adobe Illustrator CS6 supported file types

Adobe Illustrator CS6 is supposed to support .dwg file types. However, when I'm trying to import a .dwg file, I get an error message that reads, "The file "{filename}" is in an unknown format and cannot be opened."

Can anyone help? I'm at a loss. The file is valid and is not corrupt. Thanks in advance.

    It's probably a version issue.

    Try and save down the file to AutoCAD 2010 or even lower.

    I don't have AutoCAD 2010...is there any other way to get AI to open this file?
