Question

Adobe Illustrator Staying in Pixels/PTs

Is anyone else having an issue with Illustrator staying in one measurement increment despite changing it? All of my measurements are in PX or PT even though I have changed the units under the general settings.

When you say that you changed the units under the General settings are you referring to the General section of Illustrator's preferences? The only measurements that can be changed there are the keyboard increments, angle of restraint and corner radius. To change units for all other things go to the Units section of Illustrator's preferences. Of course you might have meant that you changed the General setting in the Units section. As Ton pointed out units are document specific. You can set the units in the New document dialog when you first create the file.

Bill, changing Preferences with no documents open is how InDesign works, but not the way Illustrator works. Most of the document settings are controlled by the New Document Profiles.

Ton, I edited that post almost immediately after I posted it having realized my mind fart on the subject. Apparently, you saw the original post during the couple of minutes that it was up.

The units setting is determined by your document, either your existing or the new one based on a preset.

The only time the Preferences setting is used is when the document has no units, like pdf or an image.

Cheri,

The increment unit can be different to the general unit.

What happens if you RightClick one of the rulers? And what happens if you change it there?
