Adobe Illustrator v30.1 insane battery drain on M5 Pro MacBook Pro

I recently installed Illustrator v30.1 on this MacBook and opened it. The device temperature spiked within a minute and the battery drain was insane too. It was draining like 1% every 45 to 50 seconds.

I figured through the activity monitor that it was Illustrator as it had 147.2 under the energy tab.

Weirdest part is, I didn’t even have anything in Illustrator, just a text in an empty canvas.

I’m not sure where the problem strictly lies, my MacBook itself or the Illustrator version I got but I assume it’s the Illustrator since closing it makes the device go back to normal.

The device specs and the version of software are the following

  • MacBook Pro M5 Pro 15c CPU, 16c GPU
  • 24GB/1TB
  • macOS Tahoe 26.6.2
  • Adobe Illustrator 2026 v30.1

My old 13 inch M1 MacBook Pro had no such issues for 5 straight years but I forgot which versions I used on it. It’s kinda bizarre for a latest model to go through such. Any tips or workarounds to solve this? Thanks!

In order to find out what is happening in the background: can you turn off Wifi?

Hi, yes I just tried what you asked and there’s no difference.

I figured the 12 hour tab in the activity monitor is 147.2 as I mentioned in the thread but the energy impact tab goes up to 667.5 when I’m moving the canvas around.

Reading other threads around, tried disabling ProMotion and just run it at 60hz, the energy impact goes down to half (332.8) but it’s still not normal.

There’s definitely something wrong with Illustrator.

Hi active_ideae8ec,
Thank you for reaching out, and sorry to hear you're experiencing a battery drain issue. Would you mind updating Illustrator to the current version (30.8.1) and share results with us?

We will try our best to investigate the issue.

Thanks,
